His photographic series and installations arise from the need to establish a contact with reality.

"Lasciare libero il passo anche di notte"

Pasquale Autiero is a railwayman always on the move, passionate, generous, who has photographed with a medium format camera, a Russian Lomo from the 80s — the Holga 120 — using the pop automatism of an on-camera flash. Autiero meddles and engages, slips into things and reality, displaying a neo melody in the rhythm of a decorated wall, a warm and bright gallery that breaks up the lingering of an imaginary South into a mosaic. The irreparable contradictions of the South are displayed to the eye of the spectator through dirty and hazy margins, with a density opened up to the gaze, overheated by the halo and heat at the centre. An eye that reshuffles the cards of the sacred and the profane, of votive niches and the body, the ex-voto and flamboyant makeup, the sacred icon and the costume. But in Naples, in some way, this is a reality made paradox by the powerful experience of Giuseppe Desiato. Autiero has moved slithering inside the body of the South, between Campania and Sicily, Puglia and Calabria, the city and the province, drawing out colour from shadows, bright flashes from obscurity, freezing those radical and instantaneous contrasts of everyday life. There is a great visual instinct to mix up the inside and the outside, the conscious and the unconscious, the body and the spirit. It reveals in an image the unfinished match between the sacred and the profane and brings to the surface, with the energy of a fierce eye, a symbolic and cultural stratification.
